NEW GUIDANCE PUBLISHED – REDUCING THE NEED FOR HANDCUFFING OF CHILDREN IN CARE

Welsh government publish new guidance.

NOTE – the intentional application of handcuffs to a person amounts to an assault which is unlawful unless it can be justified which is achieved through establishing a legal right to use handcuffs and also an objective basis for doing so!

More must be and can very often can be done to reduce the need for the use of (physical intervention techniques and) handcuffs.

There is current legislation which provides very good guidance for the need to report incidents/accidents in the workplace and therefore provide data to capture incident/accident type, location, time of day, frequency, etc, etc.

Using incident reporting processes and risk assessment reviews you can introduce realistic measures to reduce, isolate and control known incidents and therefore reduce the overall need to use handcuffs (and physical intervention techniques).
