Who is the course designed for?

All staff and support workers should receive training in PBS.  Bank and agency workers should receive training and support in line with all other workers in the team. Learning must be offered to any individuals for whom supportive  practices are planned, proportionate to their level of their involvement in supporting the individual. Executive board members (and their equivalents in non-regulated services) who authorise the use of supportive interventions in their organisations must fully understand PBS and any interventions which they authorise and attend an induction course, as referenced by the Department of Health or their regulating authority. 

Course syllabus

  • Understand the historic and current context of support currently needed

  • Understand the term challenging behaviour 

  • Identify common challenges experienced by people with LD 

  • Understand who is most at risk of developing challenging behaviour 

  • Understand a model for how we behave and apply this to challenging behaviour 

  • Describe setting events, triggers and reinforcers that influence behaviour 

  • Identify challenging environments 

  • Recognise the importance of functional assessment and what this entails 

  • Understand the concept of proactive approaches 

  • Recognise the need for de-escalation and reactive interventions 

  • Understand the policy context in which we work 

What are the benefits of this course? 

The process of PBS is based on data and analysis, using functional assessment to plan interventions to change and manage behaviour. The PBS competency framework provides training that has been sourced by consulting and working alongside UK national bodies, published national guidance on Positive and Proactive Care, The Need For Reducing Restrictive Interventions. (Department of Health 2014 published document recognised and endorsed The Institute of Conflict Management through their accreditation scheme).
